Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a crucial part of healthcare, helping doctors analyze medical images, identify diseases, and assist with diagnoses and treatments. As AI advances make patient care faster and more efficient, it raises an important question: As technology becomes more involved in healthcare, what happens to the human side of medicine? Researchers suggest that skills like physical examination, communication, and empathy are still essential to providing quality care. In fact, the JAMA perspective “The iPatient Meets the iDoctor” argues that these skills may become even more important as AI becomes more common.
Bedside physical examination skills remain important today because they improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce the need for costly imaging tests, and build trust between patients and doctors. Direct physical checks help catch simple, treatable issues early on that advanced technology may overlook. Additionally, they prevent ordering too many expensive laboratory tests or scans. Touching and talking to a patient builds a deeper human connection, calming patient fears, and helping patients feel more comfortable during examinations. Doctors have also reported feeling more satisfied when spending real time with people instead of looking at results from a computer screen. However, while these examination skills are useful and efficient, hospitals now have senior doctors who have very little time to teach physical exam steps to new trainees. Furthermore, increased reliance on advanced lab tests has led to less practice of basic touch and listening skills.
While doctors are integrating AI into patient care, patients continue to value empathy in healthcare because it builds trust, lowers anxiety, and improves health outcomes. From the patient’s perspective, when doctors and nurses show care and listen, they tend to feel safe and understood. Kind words and gentle gestures help patients feel less worried about tests and treatments, and patients want doctors to acknowledge their pain and personal fears. Patients want a warm environment where they feel seen, respected and valued as human beings rather than a medical case or test result. Studies have shown that feeling supported can lower physical pain and help bodies recover faster, and patients are more likely to take their medicine and follow health advice when they trust their health provider.
AI cannot fully replicate the warmth, comfort and quick visual assessment that physicians provide when they walk into a room. While AI is advanced and helpful for many medical tasks, it has its own limitations. It can analyze discrete data, recognize patterns, and provide information quickly, but it cannot fully understand a patient's emotions, personal concerns, or individual circumstances. AI cannot take responsibility for clinical decisions; therefore, a human physician must verify its information and remain responsible for the final assessment
Ultimately, AI can make healthcare faster and more efficient, but it cannot replace the human side of medicine. Physical examinations, communication, and empathy allow doctors to understand and care for patients beyond their medical data. As AI continues to advance, preserving these skills will ensure that technology supports doctors while keeping the human connection at the center of healthcare.
