Recently, a video went viral showing students at the University of Central Florida booing a commencement speaker after she called artificial intelligence “the next Industrial Revolution.” The speaker, Gloria Caulfield, seemed surprised by the reaction, but honestly, I understand why the students reacted that way.
I think graduation speeches are supposed to inspire students and celebrate all of their hard work. Many of the graduates at this ceremony studied arts, humanities, communication, and media. Those are some of the exact fields people worry AI could replace or negatively affect. Hearing a speaker praise AI at a moment that should have been about the students probably felt insensitive and out of touch. I also think a lot of students are scared about their future careers because AI is growing so fast. The boos were probably less about being rude and more about frustration and fear for what comes next.
At the same time, I do not think AI is completely bad. AI can help people learn, save time, and improve technology in many ways. However, I think people are tired of hearing adults and companies constantly praise AI without talking enough about the risks. Students want reassurance that creativity, human jobs, and originality will still matter in the future. That is why this moment became so popular online. It showed a real reaction from young people instead of pretending everyone is excited about AI. I think the situation proves that schools and leaders need to listen more carefully to students’ concerns instead of only focusing on technology and business success.
